Principle Explained: Return to the Scholars — Shaykh Rabi‘ al-Madkhali

A Common Misconception Amongst Students of Knowledge and the Response to it from the Words of Shaykh Rabi‘ al-Madkhali, may Allah preserve him.

Shaykh Rabi‘ al-Madkhali (hafidhahullah) wrote in one of his refutations of Abul-Hasan al-Ma’ribi concerning the doubt: “Return to the scholars in every single matter.”:

“Returning to the scholars is a great and very important matter in Islam however this happens in matters that are unclear to other than the scholars.

As for returning to them in clear matters, like the fundamentals Abul-Hasan opposed, then there is nothing upon the scholars except aiding and endorsing the truth and its people, and taking action against the oppressive wrongdoer who incites fitan.

Certainly, this call to seek judgment from the scholars in matters that are as clear as the sun is one of the heinous absurdities invented by this cunning al-‘Ar‘uri group (followers of ‘Adnan al-‘Ar‘ūr) and has deceived many from Ahl al-Sunnah.”
