Fasting While Travelling: Shaykh al-Albani — Hadith Commentary and Authentication (Takhrij)
Ḥamzah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated that he asked Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ about fasting while travelling, so Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ said:
“Whatever is easy for you then do (meaning to either fast or not while travelling).”
Shaykh Muḥammad Nāṣir al-Din al-Albāni (rahimahullah):
This ḥadith has been reported by al-Tammām in ‘al-Fawā’id’ (1/161). The ḥadith has other chains (ṭuruq) from Ḥamzah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) with different wordings, one of them is in ‘Ṣaḥiḥ Muslim’.
I chose to authenticate [and study] the ḥadīth with this wording due to [two reasons], firstly, due to value of the source and secondly, due to it including the reason for the Prophet ﷺ allowing the traveller and giving him the choice to either fast or not, and that reason is to make it easy (al-taysir). People are completely different in that as we see and know from the difference of their abilities and natural states. For some people it is easier for them to fast with the people and do not [want to] make up the fasts outside of Ramadan. Whereas others are not interested in that, so they do not fast and then they make up the fasts. So may Allāh bless and make good mention of our unlettered Prophet to whom Allāh revealed the verse:
يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ
“Allāh intends for you ease and does not want to make things difficult for you.” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:185)
Authentication (Takhrij):
This ḥadith has been reported by al-Tammām in ‘al-Fawā’id’ (1/161), he said: Abū ‘Ali Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Faḍālah b. Ghaylān b. al-Ḥusayn al-Sūsi al-Ḥimṣi al-Ṣaffār informed us saying: Abū ‘Abdillāh Baḥr b. Naṣr narrated to us saying: Ibn Wahb narrated to us saying: Ibn Lahi‘ah narrated to us from Yazid b. Abi Ḥabib that ‘Imrān b. Abi Anas narrated to him from Abū Salamah b. ‘Abdil-Raḥmān from Ḥamzah b. ‘Amr ﷺ.
I (al-Albāni) say: Its chain of narration is authentic; the narrators are trustworthy (thiqāt) from the men on ‘al-Tahdhib’ except al-Sūsi in this chain. Ibn ‘Asākir mentioned him in ‘Tārikh Dimishq; (2/213) with many scholars narrating from him and he narrated from Abū Sa‘id b. Yūnus that he said: “He (al-Sūsi) died in the year 339AH. He was trustworthy (thiqah) and his books were good (jiyād).”
As for Ibn Lahi‘ah, he has weakness in his memory except in what the ‘Abādilah narrated from him, those narrations are authentic, and this report is from them as you can see (‘Abdullah ibn Wahb narrating from Ibn Lahi‘ah).
